Carol Christian Poell SS2004 Striped Trousers
Carol Christian Poell is noted as one of the most researched designers of the twenty first century. Although his production timeline started in 1994, releasing a capsule of only a basic 4 items, he has gone-on to immerse himself in the experimental avant-garde cosmos. Growing up, Carol acquired the tricks of the Gerberlehre trade early on. Having been birthed into a bloodline of leather manufacturers, Carol’s career officially started at the age of 15 in his hometown of Linz, Austria. Multiple years of his early life were spent studying tailoring at fashion schools in Vienna and Milan, before making the traditional jump towards a more independent endeavor. His collected principles from the arduous tasks at his family business and the scrutiny of tailoring and design concepts at his universities, has prepared him to take a very purposeful path in a recently manufactured industry.
The Spring 2004 collection, entitled “Mainstream Downstream,” is a theatrical exposé that targets the incessant trends of fashion. Poell sent his corpse-like models floating down the Naviglio Grande in Milan in the midst of fashion week. This extreme presentation aimed to highlight the importance of preserving use for things that seem obsolete. The Italian waterway merely served as a metaphor for all things that die when interest is lost (fast-fashion). The performance also shows a great resemblance to the character Ophelia in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” In the play, she is driven into a state of madness that results in her drowning by the end of the script.
