General Research 1999 Multi-pocket Cargo Shorts
Setsuma Kobayashi was raised on the second floor of his fathers shoe factory and began working in the footwear industry after graduating high school. After five years working for a Tokyo footwear company, Kobayashi was given the opportunity to design footwear for their runway shows, which is where his interest in designing clothing began. While working, he observed the movement culminating through both Jun Takahashi and his many peers from Ura-Harajuku. In 1993, he was connected with a pattern maker through designer Takeo Kikukchi where he began to flesh out his own clothing brand. Beginning in 1994, Kobayashi founded the aptly named General Research with the intention of exploring the many facets of fashion he had become interested in. Designing everything from technical wear, naval-wear, and biker-wear, Kobayashi had never been one to follow trends. He focused on the integration of humans and nature into everyday living, creating pieces with a purpose. This expression of individualism through the lens of nature, coincides with 19th century naturalist Henry Thoreau who served as Kobayahsi’s philosophical inspiration. Thoreau historically advocated for the non participation in unjust government which prompted one of his most famous works “Walden; or, Life in the Woods,” which explores his decision to remove himself from the corruption of society and live alone in the wilderness. In a sense, Kobayashi’s clothing can be seen as his own interpretation of Thoreau’s civil disobedience, although he frequently visits Tokyo and works as an entrepreneur. Despite this, Setsuma Kobayashi’s General Research will always serve as a means for people to incorporate nature within their daily lives.
This pair of dark khaki shorts features a combination of velcro and zippered pockets on the front and back of the bottoms. Several black D-Rings are placed around the waist and below the cargo pockets. A zipper fly is exposed and opens the entire front rise of the shorts. A large double-zipped pocket is affixed to the back below the waist.
