Hussein Chalayan Stone Wash Tyvek Jeans

In an interview Chalayan described his mission: “Every-thing around us either relates to the body or to the environment," Chalayan explained. "I think of modular systems where clothes are like small parts of an interior, the interiors are part of architecture, which is then a part of an urban environment. I think of fluid space where they are all a part of each other, just in different scales and proportions" (Quinn, p. 120).
Tyvek is a synthetic fiber made from high-density polyethylene. It is commonly used in postage envelopes in order to protect the goods inside due to its rip-resistance. Additionally, it is used in construction to cover unfinished builds. This use directly relates to Chalayan’s infatuation with architectonic fashion, and the unconventional ways he incorporates his curiosities in his designs.
It can be assumed that the inspiration from these jeans was likely drawn from his first commercial collection in AW1994 entitled, ‘Cartesia.’ The theme of this early Hussein presentation was that, “the body becomes like documents.” This quote likely references Chalayan’s time spent away from Cyprus, when his only form of communication with his mother were stamped letters.
