Raf Simons AW2004-2005 ‘Waves’ M-51 Cargo Jacket
Raf Simons AW2004-2005 ‘Waves’ M-51 Cargo Jacket
Raf Simons A/W 2004 collection entitled ‘Waves’ explores narrative themes of isolation and culture while simultaneously taking a bold step within menswear. Combining his signature oversized aesthetic and printed graphics, Raf introduces zippered wetsuits, complex cargo jackets, and draping overcoats paired with hoodies. These garments shaped the future design language of modern streetwear and feel as contemporary as the year they released. Embedded within the clothing are themes as intriguing as their visual representation, which was described by artist Peter De Potter who collaborated with Simons from 2001 to 2010.
“The collection explores the idea of conscious confinement and willful enclosure. Again starting with the concept of an imaginary community outside of regulated society, the whole of the collection evokes the feeling of enlightenment and personal enrichment one can find in extreme but self-chosen isolation. The collection references at random various drop-out cultures that are conceived as likeminded tribes but when examined closely, are in fact gatherings of individuals seeking self-fulfillment through lonely practice. Wave cultures, cultures of rave waves and ocean waves. Eyes closed, alone with music, living only inside music, happily disappearing into the vortex of sounds and emotions. Arms wide open, alone with nature, taking to the sea, drifting away from the shore, fully realizing the only options are drowning or surviving.”
This grey cotton jacket features a classic M-51 sit and a faded wash. The back of the jacket utilizes tailored darting and the unfinished collar contributes to its distressed appearance. Three cargo pockets are sewn into the front and dual epaulettes have been secured to the shoulders.
