Raf Simons SS1999 “Kinetic Youth” Knit Sweater
Suspending the graphic designs and anarchic austerity that informed much of his earliest work, Raf Simons Spring Summer 1999 collection “Kinetic Youth” bridges the gap between youth culture and tailored suiting. Taking inspiration from rave subculture, Simons transforms the slim top / large bottom configuration into lustrous garments with soft structure and utmost simplicity. The show begins with over a dozen monochromatic looks, each deconstructing traditional formal attire and adding in a bit of adolescent charm. A slew of boyish clones wearing tight white turtlenecks and earth toned trousers soon followed. In an effort to infuse his rebellious nature, Simons conjoined these looks with loose, vibrant tank tops, sleeveless leather jackets, and tattered check sneakers, all set to the theme of David Bowie’s “Heroes.”
