Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby AW2014 Multicolored Knit Sweater
Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby AW2014 Multicolored Knit Sweater
Sterling Ruby is an American artist who is as multifaceted as one can get. Known for his sculptures, paintings, ceramics, collage, video, drawing, and textiles, his inspirations range from urban graffiti to globalization, and most often are represented within large, densely packed installations. There is no concrete method of describing Sterlings work, (as it diverges into many different mediums) but he is known to directly oppose the work of minimalists, with his art often appearing scratched, defaced, camouflaged, dirty, or splattered.
Within the world of fashion, Ruby is most commonly known for his partnership with Belgian designer Raf Simons. Their collaboration began in 2008 with the conception of Raf Simons’ flagship Tokyo store which was done entirely by Sterling Ruby. In subsequent years, Raf used Ruby’s splattered paint designs for a variety of denim jackets and jeans until his Autumn / Winter 2014 menswear show, which was centered exclusively around Ruby’s work. The collection had been 9 years in the making, and although Sterling’s art is often massive in scale, Raf was able to condense his themes into an assortment of coats and crewnecks. Ruby’s art often looks unfinished, which in the context of Simons’ collection, appeared in pieces of fabric that seemed to be in an upward rush as if they were to fly off the garment. Using this design element to present themes of deconstruction and reconstruction, Simons was able to successfully represent the complex nature of Sterling Ruby’s art.
This knit sweater features a multiple layers of colored yarn that are woven together to make up an abstract red, white, and blue pattern.
