Rick Owens AW2001 “SLAB” Burnout Waxed Denim Chore Jacket
The Rick Owens brand and the idea of evolution go hand and hand. Dropping out of the Otis College of Art and Design to pursue pattern-making and draping courses, Owens first foray into the fashion world was creating knock off designer clothing which he produced during his studies. Later Infusing this tongue and cheek attitude into the brands ethos, Owens unveiled his eponymous label in 1994 and began producing one-off pieces from recycled leather and other salvage materials. Gaining a cult like following for his immense quality and masterful tailoring, Owens landed his first runway show in 2002 under the funding of Anna Wintour and Vouge, and since then, his gothic glamour has been redefining beauty within the fashion avant garde. Beginning with the draping silhouettes and leather work he has become known for, Owens has continuously moved to more unnerving silhouettes and body fixtures, often representing an unorthodox form of beauty within each collection. Taking inspiration from everything from brutalist architecture to the bible, Owens remains as diverse as his collections and cements himself as a force to be reckoned with.
SLAB is Rick Owens’ denim diffusions line from the early 2000’s. This brown waxed denim chore jacket features patchwork pieces on the shoulders and the hips. These denim patches were attached during the over-dyeing process and removed post finishing, leaving the seam ripped yarns and contrasting panels.
