Yohji Yamamoto SS2002 Yellow Spotted-Horse Denim Suit
The Spring 2002 collection is one of the most distinguishable Yamamoto presentations and is unlike anything shown before by the Japanese designer, given his unorthodox use of denim. Large and wide bottom silhouettes with rolled cuffs, trudged down the runway, paired with shirting and jackets of light, contrasting pastel colors. Japanese actresses from the early to mid-1900’s, regarded as the the reign of Emperor Showa, were created and printed by artist, Saeko Tsuemura. The computer generated appeal matches the aesthetics of the Y2K revival and rave pop-culture.
This casual suit is made in collaboration with a brand from Osaka, Japan called Spotted Horse. The denim specialists at SH had long ago created a “Magic Wash” all done by hand in order to produce one-of-a-kind looking garments. In order to contribute to sustainable industry practice, Spotted Horse offers a “Make Over” Service that allows clients to submit their old denim to be customized into something new.
This blazer and trouser pairing are both crafted from a yellow selvedge denim and hand-washed to produced a worn-in effect. The faded suit can be seen in look five of the SS2002 collection, whereas a less worn iteration can be viewed in look six. Other looks feature printed shirts paired with the yellow denim trousers. The blazer is intended to be more fitted as opposed to the billowing bottoms which are meant to be oversized. Although the jeans are marked a size 40 waist, lots of options are available for the wearer to cinch the waist with a belt, or alter the denim to their liking with a possible surplus of selvedge fabric left over. Please see the inside label for care-related instructions.
