Dior Homme SS2002 ‘Bloodwound’ Tank-Top
Much of Hedi Slimane’s work was inspired by punk rock at the time, which he mixed and balanced seamlessly with the tailored suiting that Dior menswear was built upon. It was rumored that Karl Lagerfeld tried to loose weight in order to fit the size 44-46 runway samples that Slimane presented. This Spring / Summer 2002 collection was no exception to deconstructed themes of male stereotypes. The lanky models with broken hearts hinted towards an advocation of male vulnerability, along with the collection title being, “Boys Don’t Cry.”
The sequin and bloodied charm embroideries that cling to the chest of this piece, were added meticulously by a Dior employed third party, Maison Lesage. This French Atelier requires a mandatory training period of 5-10 years for any of its prospective workshop artisans. This supports the houses 100 year reputation of producing accents and embellishments on runway gowns from the likes of Chanel and Dior, using the same tried and true process since its foundation in 1924.
This morbidly elegant tank-top was Inspired by an early photo of the punk rock band, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers. The photo depicts band members with blood wounds on their white collared shirts with hands over their hearts.
