Martin Margiela SS2005 Artisanal Reconstructed Sweatshirt
Martin Margiela’s artisanal line was conceptualized in the year of 1988 as a means of recycling vintage garments and giving them a new life through reconstruction. These new creations are intended to be worn in a different way or introduced to a new environment when compared to its original purpose. From minute adjustments to complete deconstruction, this venture exists as Margiela’s most experimental line and continues to set an industry example of repurposed fashion.
What is so intriguing about this piece, is how Martin Margiela sourced the graphics for these sweatshirts. The reverse graphic depicts a classic vintage logo of a small mountain town located in upstate New York called, Lake Placid. It is unknown how the designer came across the inspiration for these graphics, but having visited Lake Placid dozens of times, this piece certainly holds a lot of value in our permanent collection.
This reversible cotton crewneck sweatshirt is composed up a sleeveless t-shirt sewn to the top of a college crewneck sweatshirt. The arms are reconstructed with segments from a black sweatshirt.
